Office Hours: By appointment (Zoom or in person)
My name is Dr. David Macinnis Gill, and I'm an associate professor of secondary education here at UNCW, where I have worked since 1999. Before that I was at Ohio University, and before that, I was a high school teacher in Chattanooga, TN. I hold a doctorate in education from the University of Tennessee and was the President of ALAN (The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents) and other national positions. I'm also the award-winning author of novels for young readers, and my short stories, essays, and poetry have appeared in journals, magazines, and anthologies. I live in a home with two kitchens, despite the fact that I only know how to make pancakes, bacon, and macarons.
Email is the best way to reach me. Send to gilld@uncw.edu and put SEC 520 in the subject line. Expect a reply within 24 hours on weekdays. Weekend emails will get a response by Monday.
I do not use Canvas email.
By appointment. Email me to set up a Zoom call or an in-person meeting. We will find a time that works.
We spend a lot of time communicating in text this semester. Tone gets lost without facial expressions and vocal cues. These ten rules keep things civil and productive.
Announcements, feedback, and schedule changes come through these two channels. Both are worth checking several times a week.
Online courses require the same time commitment as face-to-face sections. Budget your hours like you would for any three-credit course.
As education students, we hold ourselves to the Watson College Professional Dispositions. They are worth taking seriously.
You will get written feedback on assignments within five business days of the closing date. If a grading delay happens, you will hear about it in an announcement.
Schedule shifts, assignment clarifications, and any other updates will go out as Canvas Announcements. Another good reason to keep notifications on.
